SUMMARY:

This project aims, through a specific focus, to address issues related to the representation of black women, spaces of memory, and fictionality as a realm in which the possibilities of human existence can be explored, as observed in the corpus of this project composed of the novels 'Kindred,' 'Parable of the Sower,' and 'Parable of the Talents' by Octavia Butler. Possessing a fluid prose, Butler places the black woman at the center of her narratives – a figure previously excluded from science fiction and fantasy narratives. A pioneer, Octavia Butler is considered the first black woman in the Science fiction tradition in North America, space that up until then was almost exclusively occupied by men, especially white men. Power relations, spaces and movements of memory, slavery, the appreciation of knowledge, and the representation of black women in fiction are themes dear to the author and present in the selected novels for this research. The protagonists of the novels embody distinct experiences of existing as black women in a slave past (Kindred) or in a future in collapse (Parable of the Talents and Parable of the Sower). The recurrence of certain themes, such as slavery, motivated the selection of the corpus for this project, which aims to analyze and discuss the representation of black women, memory issues in Butler, and investigate the novel as a space for exploring the possibilities of human existence.

To achieve this, we will draw on the ideas of hooks (2019), Davis (2016), Evaristo (2009), Kundera (2009), Assman (2011), Friedman (2017), Jameson (2006), Rancière (2009), and Rorty (2007).
