SUMMARY:

The aim of this work is to contribute to academic studies on procedures for analyzing a video game that has a literary work as its source text, a production referred to here by the term "game adaptation". As a corpus to be used in the development of the analysis, we selected three adaptations of the English classic Hamlet, by William Shakespeare: Hamlet or the Last Game without MMORPG Features, Shaders and Product Placement (Denis Galanin, 2010), To Be or Not To Be (Tin Man Games, 2015) and Elsinore (Golden Glitch, 2019). The construction of the analysis procedures is anchored in studies in the field of adaptation theory, with special emphasis on Hutcheon (2013) and her defense of adaptation as a creative process, a form of reception and a work with its own value, Sanders (2006) and her distinction between adaptation and appropriation, with the latter having a greater distance from the adapted text, and Stam (2008), with his established relationship between adaptation and the postcolonial. Understanding game adaptation also involves understanding what constitutes the game as media and language. Therefore, we highlight the importance of the contributions of Huizinga (2000), Caillois (1990) and Juul (2005) in defining the game and its main structural elements, such as the need for rules governing player behavior, and Murray's (2003) reflections on the narrative potential of digital media involving concepts such as agency, the pleasure derived from the feeling of influence exerted on the work. As a method, we carried out a textual analysis (Belsey, 2013; Fernández-Vara, 2015) combined with a bibliographical research on the subject of adaptation in games and a comparative study between the works in the corpus in order to understand their strategies when adapting the text of Hamlet, how they promote discussions and add experiences to this classic and propose generalizations that can help in understanding game adaptation as a cultural, artistic, narrative, literary and aesthetic artifact. Given the lack of in-depth studies on literary adaptation in games (Stobbart, 2018; Cardozo; Mattar, 2017), the research contributes to elucidating the experience of playing an adaptation as an act in which the actions required by the game are constructed as intertexts that comment on and reflect on the adapted material.
