SUMMARY:

This study aims to explore how the epic is manifested in comics, through the analysis of Ilíada de Homero: tradução em quadrinhos (Belo Horizonte, 2012), by Tereza Barbosa, Andreza Caetano, Paulo Corrêa and Piero Bagnariol. It is proposed that such a manifestation cannot take place in classical ways, as it would not be sustained in contemporary culture; it subsists, therefore, in epic discourse, which is capable of satisfactorily accommodating elements of the epic Iliad in postmodern times. For this, as a lens of analysis and operating mode, the epic undergoes an intersemiotic translation (or adaptation) in the courted work, which affected not only the artistic environment, but also the cultural, formal and linguistic, to represent the story of the wrath of Achilles through the eyes of Comics. It is clear, however, that there is a requirement for a creative translation – or transcreation – that makes Homeric rhetorical figures emerge, predominantly manifested in their famous similes and epithets, which take shape, in the book studied, through creativity in translation. But the transposition needs to be generated in processes of signification, in which the figures are formed surrounded in a significant macrocosm, which is the metonymic transcreation. This is the main interest of this study, which seeks, in the analysis of the work and supported by theorists such as Will Eisner (2010), Walter Benjamin (2008), Linda Hutcheon (2013), Roman Jakobson (1959; 2003) and Haroldo de Campos (2015), unveil the paths that, often tortuous, manifest the reoxygenation of classic genres by new media-cultural guises that, in constant transformation, reveal the richness of approaching the arts through discourse. Keywords: metonymic transcreation; epic discourse; metaphor; metonymy; Ilíada de Homero: tradução em quadrinhos.
