SUMMARY:

The doctorate theses project discusses, through theoretical and methodological input of Pêcheux’s discourse analysis (DA), the effects of historical and discursive memory about (non)place of the teaching of foreign languages in public schools in Pernambuco. The conditions of production of public policies to the foreign language teaching in Brazil is marked by legal changes and promote a set of displacements about the teaching of foreign languages in school curriculum, as the most recent school reform, that establishes English as the only foreign language offered, mandatorily, at public schools. Because of inquietude about the connections in the middle of (non)place of teaching English and other languages (DE NARDI, 2023) in school curriculum and the contradictory increase of opportunities for interchange studies to public school students, we look forward to comprehending the effects of historical and discursive memories about teaching other foreign languages in the state of Pernambuco. Our corpus is composed of discursive sequences coming from official documents, normative instructions, and educational guidelines, as well as the disclosure materials of linguistic policies of state of Pernambuco between 1993 and 2023, aiming to understand the memory about the teaching of other foreign languages in Brazil and their rapport with public policies and school curriculum in Pernambuco. For this purpose, we will resume the works originated from DA, such as Pêcheux (1997, 2014, 2015), Courtine (2009), Rodrigues (2010), De Nardi (2007, 2023), Grigoletto (2020), and Pfeiffer and Grigoletto (2018). Moreover, we adjoin the contributions of Foucault (1987); Dadot and Laval (2016), Laval (2019, 2020) – the aforementioned will not necessarily complement; however they present important readings to count reflections about how liberal and corporate logic, which have been taken into account as crucial to Brazilian school system, may have relation with (non)place of plurilingual policies in basic teaching.
