SUMMARY:

This study examines the functioning of Jair Bolsonaro's denialist discourse during the COVID-19 pandemic and its meaning effects on life and science through the analysis of statements made by the then-president documented in the final report of the COVID-19 Parliamentary Inquiry Committee (CPI). Using the theoretical framework of Materialist Discourse Analysis, we aim to identify the elements that characterize the discourse under scrutiny as denialist and establish the production conditions, encompassing the subjects, the situation, and memory, of this discourse in order to highlight its meaning effects concerning a mode of expression among Brazilians during the analyzed period, considering that the speaker occupied the position of the nation's highest representative at the time. In this process, we also seek to reconsider the redefined denialist discourse, particularly in Brazil, as it gained strength, prominence, and official endorsement during the pandemic period, bringing to light processes of denying science, scientific discourse, and neglect for life. In other words, a discourse marked by the influence of capital, where the economy needs to survive even if many must perish. Having said that, this practice and Bolsonaro's discourse redefine, to some extent, what is characterized as denialist discourse because they produce it from an institutional standpoint, impacting government/state practices that regulate the implementation of a minimal state. To a large extent, we aim to discuss the denialist practice that denies the pandemic and virus containment measures, based on the discursive materialities that compose our analysis. Along this path, we address the impact of denialism on indigenous peoples, the meaning effects within the scientific field in the face of the discursive movement of repeatability, contradiction, aligned with (dis)harmony between life and capitalism.
