Reason for the modern car in Pernambuco
Keywords: Literary genders. Auto. Brazilian modern theater.
This thesis aims to reflect about the reasons that made the gender auto to be reintroduced into the Brazilian literary system in the twentieth century. For that, starts with an analysis of the formal elements of the religious theater from the classical Antiquity, through the medieval and Gil Vicente’s autos, to the Brazilian modern theater, in which the religious character is replaced with a radical conscience concerning the historicity of the artistic forms. Specifically, this thesis observes the most historically consequent kinds of autos, the miracle plays, the mystery plays and the morality plays, that were re-elaborated by a remarkable generation of writers in Pernambuco. Although its inadequacy has been taken for granted when it comes to the historical concert of artistic genders, the one we here analyze places a series of reflections in the center of the discussion about the future of the modern literary forms. It’s our interest to observe how Hermilo Borba Filho, Ariano Suassuna, and Osman Lins reclaim, in specific ways, this dramatic form, at the same time extracting what interested them in this tradition and injecting into it the content of an interpretation of the modernity in Brazil.
