This dissertation investigated the process of enlistment of young men from Pernambuco in the backlands of Pajeú during the 1920s, forced by the strengthening of the cangaço structures, under the orders of what became the most famous cangaceiro, Lampião. Virgulino's band put the region of Nazaré do Pico, in Floresta, Pernambuco, at risk of constant attacks and threats, in a war for self-preservation. At the same time as the cangaceiro's rise, there was the process of the definitive establishment of police quarters in the same region, which led the Nazarenes to massively engage their children in order to find the means to fight against the growing danger. Thus, with material collected from the archives of the Pernambuco Military Police and the narratives left in books and newspapers by the characters involved, we can understand the different perspective of the Nazarene foot soldier, who had no experience of military life, but contributed his own experiences to fighting the dangers of the cangaço throughout the Northeast. For the institution, Lampião was just one of many security problems. However, to the Nazarenes, he was a childhood friend who had opted for the wandering life and wished to punish those he credited with his misfortunes. The research led us to an understanding of the troop, separating the soldier as an individual from the institution, his motivations, frustrations and his mistakes and successes in confronting Virgulino.
