SUMMARY:

Educational transitions are one of the keys to analyzing educational inequalities. In the face of
structural socioeconomic inequalities, entering and remaining in higher education becomes an
arduous task for black and poor individuals. With the recent changes resulting from the
application of affirmative action in public higher education, this research aims to observe and
analyze in macro and microstructural contexts the difficulties involved in the permanence of
students in higher education, specifically students with quota and/or blacks. Using quantitative
and qualitative techniques, the years 2015 to 2019 of the ENADE microdata were analyzed and
13 students were interviewed, being 6 students from UPE and 7 from UFPE, through descriptive
statistics and binary logistic models the quantitative data were analyzed. The qualitative data
were coded and analyzed through content analysis. The results obtained show a permanence in
conditions of inequality prior to entry into higher education, there is a differentiated occupation
of blacks and poorer depending on the prestige and the area of the undergraduate course. The
academic opportunities are also occupied differently, since monitorships and extension courses
are more likely to have quota holders and students who benefit from aid from student
permanence policies, than opportunities for PIBIC and internship. Finally, the qualitative
results show a common perception among the students about a "not belonging" to higher
education until the encounter of black references and the formation of affective bonds at the
university.
