SUMMARY:

This masters dissertation seeks to investigate how forms of identification take place in the musical doings promoted by artists from Pernambuco that perform a mixture between elements from rap and from Brazilian Northeastern popular cultures, as is the case with Aliados CP, Júnior Baladeira and Zé Brown. In order to tacke this general research problem, we attempt (1) to examine the life trajectories of these artists, tracing the elements that have contributed to the emergence of the musical productions of this type of rap; (2) to analyze what discourses make up their lyrics and what sonorities are present in their songs; and (3) to identify how the aesthetic proposals and social conventions of rap have been negotiated by these artists. To accomplish these goals, we draw on theoretical contributions from the Sociology of Music, especially from Harriet Martineau, Du Bois, Howard Becker and Antoine Hennion. We also harness contributions from authors from Cultural Studies, such as Stuart Hall, Simon Frith, Paul Gilroy and bell hooks, among others. From a methodological standpoint, in order to reach the goals of this investigation, we undertake (1) an analysis of the sounds and discourses inherent to the musical doings of the artists of Rap Repente; (2) semi-structured interviews with these artists; 3) field observations of these artists’ performances in concerts, events and festivals; 4) a daily tracking of these artists’ social networks; (5) and, finally, a documentary research on newspapers, sites and blogs that contain interviews with these artists, critical texts on their artistic productions and stories that publicize their shows.
