RESUMO:

The Southwestern Tropical Atlantic (SWTA) plays an important role in the carbonate system, but there are very few studies about carbon cycle in this area. In order to identify the factors that control the carbon dioxide (CO2) distribution in the oceanic surface layer of SWTA, this study aimed to determinate the interannual, seasonal and temporal variability of the fugacity of surface seawater CO2 (fCO2sw), the sea-air CO2 Flux and of complementary data (T °C, Salinity, surface currents, winds and Chlorophyl a) in the SWTA, between the latitudes 3° S and 14° S, next the Northeastern of Brazil. The database of this study was collected from 2008 to 2020 by an autonomous underway pCO2 measuring system by infrared detection through cruises of volunteer merchant Ships, that sail from Le Havre (France) to Santos (Brazil). The distribution of fCO2sw is related to the main features of the oceanic circulation, where the Southern Equatorial Current (SEC) and their Central (cSEC) and South (sSEC) branches are the main surface currents that act in this distribution pattern. The database showed that studied area could be divided in two subregions – Northern Subregion (NS; 3°S – 8°S) and Southern Subregion (SS; 8°S – 14°S) – that appear naturally on the maps of fCO2sw, CO2 Flux and Sea Surface Salinity around 8°S. However, the SWTA has been a great source of CO2 (3.09 ± 1.21 and 0.78 ± 1.22 mol m-2d-1, respectively) for the atmosphere, although each subregion reveals slightly different trends due the physical features that each is being submitted. The SWTA is an oligotrophic region, therefore, Chlorophyll a not directly influence CO2 distribution. The SS is generally a reasonable source all year, except from July to September (late austral winter and early austral spring) when acts as a weak sink of CO2 (averages between –0.02 and –0.51 mol m-2d-1). In this subregion, temperature followed of wind and salinity, in addition sSEC, exert a dominant control on the distribution of fCO2sw and CO2 Flux. On the other hand, the NS is a strong source of CO2 showing mean values between 1,77 and 4,51 mol m-2d-1. The meridional migration of Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and the cSEC transport westward can be influence in the data of NS over the distribution of fCO2sw and CO2 Flux. Overall, to all region, the CO2 distribution followed the seasonal cycle. The database provided significant differences in surface patterns of fCO2sw and CO2 Flux in the context of spatial, seasonal, and interannual variabilities. This was the first time that the CO2 fugacity and CO2 flux were analyzed for all Northeastern of Brazil in the large time period.
