SUMMARY:
Anemia is defined as a condition in which the concentration of hemoglobin in the blood is below the reference value, considered an important public health problem in the world. The present study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of anemia and associated factors in children aged 6 to 59 months in the state of Pernambuco. This is a cross-sectional study developed from the IV State Research on Health and Nutrition of Pernambuco (IV PESN), carried out between the years 2015/2016. Anemia was diagnosed by hemoglobin measurement (Hb <11 g/dL). It was analyzed, by means of Poisson Regression, with robust adjustment of the variance, the association between anemia and geographic and socioeconomic, housing and sanitation, maternal and prenatal and biological conditions and the child's nutritional status. A total of 737 children aged 6 to 59 months were evaluated, the prevalence of anemia in the state of Pernambuco, for this age group, was 27%, with 37.3% among children aged 6 to 23 months and 21.3% in those aged 24 months. to 59 months.The final Poisson Regression model showed that thevariables that were associated with the outcome were: drinking water treatment, maternal age and anemia, and child's age. The results of this study show that both maternal and biological factors, as well as socioeconomic and sanitation factors influenced anemia in children in the state of Pernambuco. In this sense, it is necessary to strengthen policies and programs aimed at the prevention, control and care of anemia, as well as actions aimed at promoting an adequate and healthy diet for the consumption of foods rich in iron, especially among infants.
