SUMMARY:

Skin diseases represent a public health problem in Brazil. The injuries in this organ, depending on its characteristics, are of slow recovery. Although there are classic protocols to treat these types of injuries, science is always looking for more efficient solutions. The construction of devices using biopolymers such as agarose is a viable alternative for the development of temporary skin substitutes, for a faster and more efficient recovery. In this promising scenario, an attempt is made to incorporate bioactive medicinal plants into these devices, such as the Anthurium affine Schott, a species from the Atlantic Forest, known as “vulture corn”. A. affine is widely used by the population to treat dermatitis and psoriasis, being cited for its re-epithelializing and healing effects. Due to the low amount of information about the species, this study evaluated the phytochemical composition of A. affine, in addition we developed agarose-based polymeric films with these bioactives. Additionally, the antioxidant potential of the sample was evaluated, in addition to the spectroscopic profile in the infrared region of the films incorporated with A. affine. It was observed that the hydroalcoholic extract showed antioxidant action according to the DPPH methodology. The phenolic composition was evaluated, qualitatively and quantitatively, and it was shown in both approaches that the extract had a significant amount of polyphenols, mostly flavonoids. The high concentration of these phenolic compounds was confirmed in FTIR assays. These results corroborate the popular use of this medicinal species, since flavonoid derivatives are indicated for the treatment of skin ulcers. The data obtained in this work offer scientific support to ethnobotanical reports, which refer to the anti-inflammatory and healing action of A. affine. It was demonstrated that the developed device was effective in relation to the incorporation of the extract on the surface, which was confirmed by protocols developed for this purpose, such as using the statistical analysis of principal components (PCA) from FTIR data and by UV-vis spectroscopy region of films, with these experimental protocols and data, it is believed that we are contributing scientific/technological data to the construction of new, safer and more effective temporary skin substitutes.
