SUMMARY:

Sporotrichosis is a zoonosis caused by a Sporothrix genus fungus that affects a variety of anima   ls, being cats the most affected. When infecting an individual, whether human or another species, this disease can cause skin lesions or present itself in a systemic way in a minority of cases. Itraconazole is the most used medication for the treatment because ithas a broad spectrum of action in superficial and systemic mycoses. However, some
felines may not show signs of clinical improvement with the use of this medication, oreven the total healing process, without recurrence of the disease, can be very long and painful, since the animal must remain in isolation, which justifies the search for new drugs that are more effective and less toxic to the patients. In this context, the use of natural medications can be an important alternative in the treatment. This study aimed to evaluatethe efficacy of using an herbal extract in the treatment of feline sporotrichosis in two groups, Control (group A - Itraconazole) and the other Experimental (group B -itraconazole associated with ethanolic extract). The extract was produced from the stem bark of Lonchocarpus araripensis, a species belonging to the Fabaceae family. The extraction was produced from stem bark of lyophilized and was stored in amber vials in a fr ezer, later diluted in water and administered orally at a dose varying between 0.5ml and 1.0ml with an interval of 24 hours. We selected 20 cats affected by sporotrichosis, aged between six months and four years, living in the Metropolitan Region of Recife. The animals were evaluated with biweekly visits during a period of 90 days, in which measurements and photographs of the skin lesions were performed and the verification of clinical signs for comparative analysis regarding the evolution of the treatment. At the end of the evaluations, the collected data were tabulated and submitted to the G statistical test and nonsignificant differences were identified between groups A and B, both of which showed similarity regarding the healing time of the lesions and the disappearance of clinical signs. Noting that to have a better evaluation of the healing effectiveness of the plant extract, a broader study is needed to test the effectiveness of other dosages.
