SUMMARY:

Polymeric blends are mixtures of polymers to obtain new properties for specific purposes. Blends of Poly(methyl methacrylate)/Polystyrene (PMMA/PS) in the compositions 95/05 and 90/10, with and without the surfactant octadecylamine (ODA) were successfully synthesized to obtain materials with improved characteristics. The miscibility of PMMA/PS blends, with and without ODA, was studied using the following techniques: spectrophotometry in the ultraviolet and visible region (UV-Vis), refractive index (RI), spectroscopy in the infrared region by Fourier transform (FTIR ), viscosimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The UV-vis results proved that the addition of ODA to the blends interfered with the color of the films, making them more opaque, and the blend 90/10 with ODA was the one that presented the lowest transmittance value. However, deviations in the wavelength of maximum absorption suggest electronic interactions between the pi bond electrons of the PS aromatic groups and the free electrons of the ODA amine group. On the other hand, all evaluated techniques showed that the studied blend compositions, with and without ODA, form an immiscible mixture. However, a decrease in Tg, modulus of elasticity, and tension at maximum strength were observed of systems with ODA. In addition, ODA also contributed to the increase in the refractive index of the blends in the proportions studied. Given the results obtained, it was possible to prepare a polymeric material with improved characteristics to be the basis for the reception of semiconductor particles with potential in the production of new materials in the area of solar cells, fuel cells, and flexible electronics for possible applications in the aerospace industry.
