SUMMARY:


This study investigated the roughness (output variable) during longitudinal lathing
with pressurized cutting fluid, of a Ti-6Al-4V alloy using design of experiments
(DOE) techniques. Cutting speed (vc), feed rate (f), cut depth (a), cutting fluid
temperature (T), and tool tip radius (R) were input variables, each with three
different levels. Surface roughness was the output variable. Among the favorable
aspects of this study was the implementation of a cooling system coupled to a
CNC lathe, whose purpose was to control the temperature of the cutting fluid to
increase tool life. In this case, by measuring the roughness and calculating the
uncertainty, it was possible to study the influence of the input parameters and
their interactions on the finishing of each test specimen. By applying these two
techniques, the mathematical model that best describes the roughness through
the significant parameters, such as cutting speed and feed rate, was analyzed.
The roughness value Ra, obtained by the quadratic model, is closest to the real
value, with an average absolute percentage error of 6.9%. For the roughness Rz,
the linear model is more satisfactory, with a mean absolute error of 3.8%. All
models developed in this study achieved reliability greater than 95%.
