SUMMARY:

Since culture is a constant political process of producing meanings in social experiences and
consumption is a moment of everyday practices, individuals construct popular culture at the
interface between everyday life and consumption. Popular culture is produced by the resistance
of the disempowered against dominant ideologies, generating activism. These movements aim
to transform the social order through consumption and resort to strengthening empowerment.
Empowerment is a social practice recognized for its complexity, for involving autonomy and
for the centrality of the concept of power. Supported by Michel Foucault, in this work we
consider empowerment as a device, a heterogeneous network of elements operated through
knowledge, whose action happens linked to other devices, in scalar situations - micro and
macro, and historical -synchronous and diachronic. Therefore, the experience of empowerment
is based on ideologies rooted in the daily life of those involved that unfold in consumption,
involving lines of force that potentially promote processes of: veridiction, truth games,
subjectivation and objectification, being able to manufacture realities and subjects as an effect
of knowledge-power relations. In this work, we turn to the practices of empowerment of black
women, in a city in the Agreste known for the activism of the anti-racist cause, to reveal the
operationalization of this network of forces and its relationship with activist behaviors. We ask
ourselves: What knowledge underlies the practice of empowerment of black activism in
the city of Caruaru? Our archive consisted of 1586 documents collected on the social
networks Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, from January 2020 to August 2022. local
consumers and activists. The documents were submitted to Foucauldian discourse analysis,
revealing three discursive formations: The objectification of black women normalizes and
disciplines subjection; The collective construction of values promotes deviant subjectivation
processes; The action practiced on oneself in the dynamics of subjectivation constitutes a
possible ethical subject-form. We conclude that the understanding of ideological phenomena,
such as activist consumption, is only possible if its causes are investigated, which are historical
and everyday.
