SUMMARY:

Teaching science based on a methodology based on modeling consists of inserting students in activities involving the successive construction of models. This contributes not only to an adequate construction of knowledge by them, but also to the development of skills relevant to the scientific investigation process. Skills that are necessary and/or used in the different stages of the modeling process and that contribute to the development of a more authentic science teaching. From this perspective, the objective was: to analyze the development of cognitive and metacognitive skills based on a fundamental teaching proposal in model building. In order to achieve this objective, a qualitative methodology was used, with the participation of students of the Chemistry-licentiate course, from the Agreste Campus of the Federal University of Pernambuco, located in the city of Caruaru-Pernambuco. The construction of data for this study was carried out in four synchronous meeting moments, where modeling activities were carried out and later semi-structured interviews with the participants, both stages in a virtual environment. The data collection instruments used were the modeling activities developed and the interviews. From them, it was possible to identify which cognitive and metacognitive skills were required from students in carrying out the different stages of the modeling process within the context of this study. In this way, it was possible to understand how these skills are related to the actions performed by the students in the construction of their models, and in what way they collaborate for their improvement. In addition, it was possible to address the relationship between metacognitive skills and the metacognitive model of Nelson and Narens (1996) and the relationship between skills in the modeling process. Finally, some points were pointed out, understood as limitations of the proposed teaching methodology, and also with regard to methodological aspects of the research.
