SUMMARY:

Since the first records of the docent profession to the present day, there are
challenges and difficulties to be surpassed so that teaching and learning can happen,
such as: low salaries, classroom overcrow, violence and matophobia. These factors,
along with individual characteristics can lead to stress and even illness, One
syndrome that can afflict teachers, in this context, is the Burnout Syndrome. One way
to avoid it is through the strengthening of Resilience. Based on this, this paper's
objective was to investigate how the resilient posture can help prevent Burnout
Syndrome in Science and Math teachers. For this purpose, the data collection
instruments used were a quiz on personal info, another on Burnout Syndrome and a
third on resilience. As a result, we found out that the 20 teachers of our study, in
relation to the dimensions of Burnout Syndrome, had low values of Emotional
Exhaustion and depersonalization, but higher values in relation to Decreased
professional fulfillment. In relation to Burnout Syndrome, 65% of teachers found
themselves in "Possibility to develop Burnout". 65% in "Initial stage of Burnout" and
15% did not had "any signs of Burnout". About the resilient profile, we found that 50%
of the teachers showed Medium-High Resilience, 40% showed High Resilience, and
10% showed Medium-Low Resilience. Lastly, no direct relation was found between
the selected variables (gender, age and time of exercise of the profession) and the
Burnout Syndrome and Resilience values of the participants. These results can be
considered positive, since no teacher found themselves in a advanced step of the
Syndrome, and at the same time the majority of the participants showed
Medium-High Resilience. We suggest an intensification of the studies of this theme,
preferably longitudinal research, that have more depth and a larger public, since their
numbers still are reduced. Lastly, we can consider that this dissertation contributed in
professional terms, by showing the reality of our sample, and also humans, by
altering that docency is not related only to the process of teaching and learning, but
also to the attention and care of the teachers health.
