SUMMARY:

Imageboards are anonymous discussion forums, at the interface level, that allow the posting of text and images on anonymous boards. Also known as chans, imageboards have been populating the Internet since the 2000s, with notable forums such as 4chan and 8kun - the latter being a dissenting branch from the former. This study focused on Brazilian chans, specifically the 1500chan and VHSChan. The text aims to provide an explanation of the functionality of these spaces, which are little known to the general population, as well as the origin history of imageboards - a history that is sparsely documented in traditional sources such as books and articles. Building upon this, we seek to explore how chans, based on Victor Turner's developments on communitas, can be categorized through the notion of anti-structure. This form of sociability serves as a starting point to understand the affordances that emerge due to an anti-structural and anonymous dynamic. Lastly, we employ another concept by Turner, the social drama, to comprehend two falling phenomena that occurred in 1500chan and VHSChan, leading to user migration - referred to as "anões" (dwarves) - causing an impact on the dynamics among the users.
