SUMMARY:

Breast cancer is one of the biggest causes of death amongst woman, having its mortality rate directly proportional to the stage in which it is diagnosed, with this mortality rate demonstrating the importance of early diagnose. Microwave Tomography emerges as an new diagnosing tool complementary to well-known tools such as X-Ray tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Ultrasound Imaging due to its low instrumentation costs and its high sensitivity to Breast Cancer diagnosis due to the high contrast between healthy and cancerous tissues’ dielectric properties. The objective of this work is to present a new Microwave Tomograph that consists of robotic arms positioning a set of antennas around the patient’s breast, resulting in a bigger flexibility and comfort for the patient. It’s been shown the possibility of mobile application using a low-cost single board computer, along with cloud computing to obtain the image. It has also been demonstrated the possible usage of real time imaging in the decision making of antenna positioning. This work also presents a platform for development and sharing of new microwave imaging algorithms.
