SUMMARY:

In this work, techniques based on digital signal processing are discussed to detect saturation in current transformers (CT) used in high power electrical systems. The importance of the theme is related to the fact that the CTs are fundamental equipment in these systems, so that a failure in their operation can cause damages to concessionaires and consumers. On the problem of saturation detection, speci cally, gaps have been found in the solutions already documented in the literature; in particular, these techniques have limited eld applicability, as their performance is normally evaluated using synthetically produced signals. This research is part of a broader project, in which an experiment was set up with a current source and real CTs. From a bibliographic survey, techniques were selected and implemented to detect saturation in the signals obtained from the aforementioned experiment. This methodology revealed the need for modi cations and improvements in the technique considered until then, which is based on ltering the secondary current signal by a Savitzky-Golay lter. The aforementioned adjustments, which are mainly related to the need of adaptability of the thresholds used to locate points of interest in the signal, are in the consolidation phase, but suggest that the modi ed technique is capable of detecting not only the presence of saturation, but also the part of the secondary current signal in which the phenomenon appears. In the nal stages of the work, it is expected to evaluate other saturation detection methods in the described context, also including the necessary adjustments and providing a comparative table regarding the feasibility of practical use of each one of the elaborated techniques.
