SUMMARY:

ABSTRACT: The transportation of people between cities and inside urban centers is constantly growing with the population growth all over the world, for which efficient. For this reason, fast and safe transport is required. Electric-powered rail transport is constantly growing to meet these requirements, whether with high-speed trains, subways, suburban or electric trams. In these transports, motors and electrical loads of different natures and voltage levels are used. Therefore, static power converters are needed to drive and supply these loads. As an example, there are conventional topologies such as half-bridge converters with three-phase voltage source inverters used in these applications. However, in electric vehicles, the reduction of size and weight occupied by the converters is constantly studied with the use of new converter topologies. Therefore, a new multiport converter is approached in this work, which seeks the integration of conventional converters with a reduction in the number of switches, and consequently the reduction on their volume and weight. In addition to the new converter applied to an electric tram, the vehicle is powered exclusively by batteries and supercapacitors. With these energy stores, the need for catenaries along the route is eliminated, reducing the installation cost and also eliminating visual pollution in urban centers caused by wires, which encourages tourism. These energy stores are sized to optimize the system capacity based on a known real load profile with a maximum power of 532.1 kW. The control system was designed and applied considering the characteristics of the storage facilities. In this way, the high energy density of the batteries was adequate to guarantee the continuous operation of the system, and the high-power density of the supercapacitors was appropriate to ensure the high performance of acceleration and regenerative braking. This electric trams for the proposed converter’s application is designed and analyzed with simulations in the MATLAB/Simulink platform, using the load profile similar to a real trail of 175 kW of maximum power. The simulation results obtained are presented and discussed, showing that the multiport converter is suitable for this application in electric vehicles with lower volume and weight. Simulations will also be carried out on a hardware-in-loop platform of the complete system, in addition to small-scale experiments of the proposed converter’s prototype. Finally, a load profile will be estimated for an electric tram in a region of the city of Recife-PE.
