SUMMARY:
Social and behavioral changes in society have resulted in changes in food intake with increased consumption of ultra-processed foods in association with sedentary behavior, risk factors for cardiovascular disease and increased prevalence of chronic diseases such as metabolic syndrome. In order to evaluate health issues in adults with metabolic syndrome, this work aims to investigate the effects of virtual reality and health education on nutritional and clinical parameters of these individuals in the municipality of Vitória de Santo Antão, in Pernambuco. Individuals were selected within the age group between 40 and 59 years old, both gender and attended at the Bela vista’s basic health unit. After signing the free and informed consent form, the volunteers were evaluated regarding their sociodemographic and clinical situation, food frequency and biochemical tests to be classified as: group with metabolic syndrome and without metabolic syndrome. Then, the intervention phase began: two groups underwent training with virtual reality with a previously elaborated protocol and two groups received health guidelines for six weeks, twice a week. This document presents the preliminary results of the studied population, with pre-intervention sociodemographic, anthropometric and biochemical data. Among the groups, people with metabolic syndrome showed anthropometric changes in waist circumference, waist-hip ratio and body mass index, in addition to more prominent biochemical changes in lipid and glycemic profile than the group without metabolic syndrome. With regard to food consumption, a high consumption frequency was observed for foods such as sugar, margarine, soy oil, bread, biscuits and couscous; this consumption is influenced by the socioeconomic environment and cultural habits of the assessed population. With the post-intervention results, it is expected to obtain better comparisons between groups and positively impact people's health, improving their quality of life.
