SUMMARY:
Lactobacillus is a genus of bacteria commonly used for incorporation into probiotic foods. This use is due to the properties that these bacteria have, resulting in benefits to human health, especially to the gastrointestinal tract, in addition to being considered safe for consumption. Probiotics are defined as bacteria that confer health benefits when administered in adequate amounts. The advantages extend from bowel modulation to increased immunity, preventing and alleviating symptoms of various diseases. Probiotics are susceptible to environmental and gastrointestinal tract stress, so that their benefits are achieved, it is necessary that they reach the gastrointestinal tract in amounts greater than 10⁶ CFU/g. In this sense, microencapsulation has been a technological alternative used to protect these microorganisms from environmental stress and hostile conditions present in the gastrointestinal tract, ensuring that a greater number of viable microorganisms reach the intestine to fulfill their function. In addition to the extensive use as probiotics, Lactobacillus and its microencapsulation is a topic that has a significant and growingnumber of studies considered recent, leading to a notable need for systematization that brings together relevant information to demonstrate what is proven about its advantages. Through a systematic review, it is possible to organize the literature so that it serves as a subsidy for future scientific research. Thus, this research aims to conduct a systematic literature review of studies related to microencapsulation of Lactobacillus. The hypothesis suggests that microencapsulation is a technique with potential to improve the viability and effectiveness of Lactobacillus as a probiotic. The systematic review will be carried out in accordance with PRISMA guidelines, in the databases and patents: Scopus, Pubmed, Scielo, Lilacs and INPI. The search strategy used in the databases consists of retrieving articles through the use of the terms “lactobacillus” and “probiotics” and “microencapsulation”, using Boolean operators “AND”. title followed by the reading of the abstracts. Articles published in the period covering 2018 to 2023, that is, the last 5 years, in English, Spanish and Portuguese will be included. Repeated articles, book chapters, letters to the editor, will be excluded. conference abstracts, reviews and articles that include other genera of microencapsulated microorganisms. A systematic search was carried out with updates on the genus Lactobacillus and microencapsulation in the food area through the analysis of articles produced, dissertations and theses, in addition to the search in the database patents. As a result of the initial search, 527 hits were found based on previously established criteria, namely: PubMed= 154; Scopus=367; Lilacs= 3; and ScieLo= 3, while in INPI, 32 results were found. It is expected that, with the preliminary results, it will be possible to prospect the improvement of the viability of lactobacillus as probiotics when microencapsulated.
