SUMMARY:

In the last two decades, the questions and reflections that emerged with the classroom as a background, especially, the questions about the approaches and methodologies of foreign language teaching (FLT), especially the English language (EL), have been contributing to the strengthening of research in Applied Linguistics (AL). In this regard, studies of teachers’ beliefs have emerged as possible answers to the questions that have been raised, especially regarding the teaching and learning of EL mediated by methodologies considered as new by current discourse. Thus, the present study, conducted in two public schools in the State of Pernambuco, in the city of Jaboatão dos Guararapes, aims to investigate the beliefs of EL teachers regarding the presence of Active Teaching Methodologies in the process of EL acquisition at high school level of public schools. We are based on the concepts of Culture of Learning (languages) and Culture of Teaching (languages) with Erickson, 1986, 1987; Feiman-Nemser and Floden, 1986; Almeida Filho, 1993; Barcelos, 1995, 1999; Reynaldi, 1998); of teachers beliefs in Pajares, 1992; Barcelos, 1995, 2001, 2006, 2007) and active learning and active teaching methodology in Bonwell and Eison, 1991; Kane, 2004; Wandberg and Rohner, 2009); Berbel, 2011; Borges and Alencar, 2014; Valente; De Almeida and Geraldini, 2018. The research subjects are two EL teachers from two high schools (A and B). We adopted a qualitative-interpretative approach of descriptive character for data collection/generation and analysis, which, in the first stage, the participants had their classes observed and, in the second phase, he/she participated in a semi-structured individual interview. As instruments for data collection/generation were used: Observation of classes (O); Field Notes (FN) and Semi-Structured Individual Interviews (SI). Preliminary and embryonic analyses present the beliefs of the teacher-participant as divided into five categories: 1) Beliefs about the concept of active teaching methodologies (ATM); 2) Beliefs about applicability and the role of ATM in EL classes; 3) Beliefs about the participation of apprentices in EL classes mediated by the ATM; 4) Beliefs about BNCC and active teaching methodologies in EL classes; 5) Beliefs about the perception of students regarding the presence of ATM in EL classes.
