PÁGINAS: 95
RESUMO:

Sugarcane bagasse is a strategically important lignocellulosic residue for second generation bioethanol production, yet its efficient conversion is limited by structural recalcitrance and high-water consumption during pretreatment. This study evaluated hydrothermal pretreatment of natural sugarcane bagasse with emphasis on liquid fraction recycling and water reuse, using experimentally analyzed data to assess process efficiency, sugar recovery, and sustainability.
Pretreatment experiments were conducted at increasing temperature conditions, considering 170, 180, 190 and 200°C and successive recycling cycles of the liquid fraction in triplicates under controllable conditions of pH. The analyzed results showed that higher pretreatment temperatures promoted greater solubilization of hemicellulose components, reflected by increased xylose concentration in the liquid fraction, while simultaneously improving cellulose accessibility during enzymatic hydrolysis. However, excessive severity led to progressive pH reduction in the recycled liquid, which influenced enzymatic performance in later cycles.
Quantitative analysis of enzymatic hydrolysis demonstrated that glucose yields increased significantly for pretreated Sugarcane bagasse compared to untreated bagasse, confirming effective reduction of biomass recalcitrance. Xylose recovery was strongly dependent on pretreatment severity and recycling stage, with optimal cycles maintaining high sugar availability before inhibitory effects became evident. Water retention measurements and mass balance analysis further indicated that liquid fraction recycling substantially reduced freshwater demand without compromising hydrolysis efficiency within defined operational limits.
Overall, the data analyzed confirms that hydrothermal pretreatment combined with controlled liquid fraction recycling enhances glucose and xylose recovery while improving water efficiency. The identification of optimal temperature and recycling cycle conditions demonstrates the technical feasibility of integrating water reuse strategies into second generation bioethanol production from sugarcane bagasse, supporting more sustainable and resource efficient biorefinery processes.
