RESUMO:

The intake of nitrate has been associated with improved performance in various high-intensity, intermittent, and short-duration exercise models. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of acute sodium nitrate supplementation on the muscular endurance of amateur functional fitness athletes. As a secondary objective, the study aimed to evaluate the rating of perceived exertion(RPE) during and after the protocol, monitor neuromuscular fatigue through countermovement jump height, and track heart rate during a muscular endurance test. To this end, a randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover clinical trial was conducted with twelve individuals experienced in functional fitness. They ingested 750 mg (12 mmol) of sodium nitrate (SN) or a placebo (PLA) and then performed a specific test for the modality to assess localized muscular endurance. In this test, participants were required to complete as many repetitions as possible across four exercise routines, each lasting four minutes, with a two-minute rest interval between them. The RPE was recorded during each interval between routines. The measurement of countermovement jump height was taken before and after the exercise protocol. A paired-sample Student's t-test was applied to examine the effect between the experimental conditions (SN vs. PLA) on the total number of repetitions performed and the area under the curve (AUC) for the number of repetitions and RPE relationship. To compare the effects of the two experimental conditions (SN vs. PLA) regarding jump height, a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with repeated measures (experimental condition x time) was used. No significant differences were found between the mean number of repetitions under the two experimental conditions (PLA = 163±34 vs. SN = 165±37.2; p = 0.492). Similarly, no significant differences were found in the AUC (p = 0.607) of the repetitions and SPE relationship between the experimental conditions. A decrease in countermovement jump height performance was observed for both conditions. We conclude that sodium nitrate supplementation did not enhance muscular endurance performance in amateur functional fitness athletes. Further studies are needed to understand the real effects of this form of supplementation administration in this type of exercise protocol.
