SUMMARY:

This work aims to map and analyze the mathematical strategies and justifications used by eighth-period mathematics undergraduates when faced with situations that involve the study of continuous functions. The theoretical framework comprises the Theory of Registers of Semiotic Representation (TRRS) and argumentation studies. Mathematically, we focus on the crucial aspects of the semiotic representations, their treatments, and their conversion while studying continuous function. These aspects will be analyzed based on knowledge mobilization from the students' argumentative process. We will review the literature on the argumentation used to promote mathematical knowledge involving continuous functions or TRRS. As for the research methodology, we built a situation involving continuous function that will be undertaken with a group of five to ten students. After solving the situation, the researcher will challenge the students to produce a video explaining to a colleague how to solve it so that the student can understand it. After the explanations in the video, there will be a moment of discussion/questioning, raising other possibilities of resolution from other representation records - contra-argumentation from the teacher. Then, the student will be challenged to think about and make a critical position. A pilot study will be carried out with two students to identify possible limitations and possibilities of using the situation. The students' arguments and counter-arguments will be analyzed based on the TRRS and the argumentation. We will verify the main argumentative elements mobilized to justify their results, mainly regarding their support in the different registers of semiotic representations.
