SUMMARY:

Objective: To analyze the association between functionality and knowledge, attitudes and practices for the prevention of Covid-19 in the elderly in the city of Recife. Method: Cross-sectional analytical study, with 144 elderly residents in the city of Recife. Data collection was carried out remotely, between June and September 2020. The dependent variable knowledge, attitudes and prevention practices of Covid-19 was constructed through Latent Class Analysis. The main independent variable was functionality for instrumental activities of daily living. For statistical analysis, absolute and relative frequency distribution of variables, chi-square test and multiple analysis of multinomial logistic regression were used. Results: Most of the elderly studied showed independence in terms of functionality for instrumental activities of daily living. Covid-19 prevention was categorized into three classes according to knowledge, attitudes and prevention practices. It was identified that the majority of the elderly showed regular knowledge and attitudes and good practice regarding the prevention of Covid-19. After multiple analysis, the functionality and education variables remained significantly associated with knowledge, attitudes and practices to prevent Covid-19. The independent elderly for the instrumental activities of daily living were more likely to have excellent knowledge, attitudes and practices for the prevention of Covid-19, when compared to the dependent elderly. Elderly people who studied for five to eight years were more likely to have excellent knowledge, attitudes and practices for the prevention of Covid-19, when compared to those who never studied or who studied from one to four years. Conclusion: Functionality for instrumental activities of daily living was associated with knowledge, attitudes and practices to prevent Covid-19 in the elderly. The greater the functional independence, the better the prevention of Covid-19 in the elderly.
